FIEL FAMILY AND THE WORlD WAR

It is very nice to sit before our Fiel elders and listen to their stories. One Saturday morning, I took the challenge of visiting Sr. Milagros Fiel of the Blue Sister’s Covent in Poinsettia, Quezon City.

We first talked about her roots of which she shared that her grandfather is named Simplicio Fiel from Ormoc. Her lolo Simplicio married twice.

Of the first marriage, Simplicio had two sons: Agido Fiel and Agaton Fiel.

Of the second marriage, Sr. Milagros could only remember Tiyo Patro and Atty. Oscar.

Sr. Milagros shared that her father, Agaton Fiel married Emiliana Tan. She described her father Agaton as “studious and a brilliant editor of a Spanish paper.” He was a valedictorian in San Beda. He was also under the Jesuits during his pre-law years but he finished law in UST under the Dominicans.

Ito ang mga anak nina Agaton Fiel at Emiliana Tan: (please feel free to add infos)

1. Antonio Fiel -- not married, an engineer. He was taken by the Japanese during the World War II and he was never seen again. Ito ang nangyari: When McArthur landed in Leyte, all were very enthusiastic. When he was caught having an earphone, he was captured by the Japanese. Sr. Milagros believed her brother was brought to the Fort Santiago.

2. Josefina Fiel – a.k.a Sister Anne Fiel of the Religious of the Good Shepherd (RGS). She is now based in Katipunan Road, malapit sa Ateneo de Manila.

3. Natividad Fiel – died in an accident in the States.

4. Milagros Fiel – the one I interviewed

5. Charlie/Carlos Fiel – studied in Ateneo de Manila University; worked as PR in Makati. He is the father of the freelance writer Corito Fiel. He was known for his writings “Playing Poker with God” and “Blue Lady.” He was a “dormant genius” according to Sister Milagros. He died in Canada.

6. Celina Fiel – a.k.a. Sister Teresita of the Religious of the Good Shepherd. She is now in St. Bridget School in Batangas. Good in writing.

WORLD WAR STORY

One night during the World War II, they heard a knock at around ten in the evening. The Japanese came and asked them to surrender their radio. Agaton Fiel’s Family had already given the radio earlier to another family, so wala na silang maipakita. The Japanese soldiers asked Agaton to go with them. The family members were already crying.

At the end of the staircase, the Sacred Heart of Jesus was hanging and when the Japanese passed by there, Emiliana Tan (the wife of Agaton Fiel) asked the soldiers if they could pray first as a family. “Because we are Catholics,” Emiliana asserted.

The Japanese consented. That was December 6. The family prayed hard for a miracle since the following day would be the birthday of their father Agaton.

After the prayer, the family members kissed their father goodbye. And indeed the miracle happened. The Japanese soldiers decided not to take Agaton Fiel with them anymore…

ADDITIONALS:
open for corrections – pumapalya na kasi ang memory ni Sister Milagros Fiel, hehe)

Carlos Fiel married Cecilia Capistrano, daughter of the Justice of the Supreme Court. Ito and mga anak nila. Maaaring di pa kumpleto ang list na ito :
1. Corito Fiel (based in Canada);
2. Rose Fiel (based in Canada and married to a man with the surname Nakpil. Anak niya si Giovanni Fiel Nakpil, who was featured here in our blog);
3. Bobbit (based in Canada)
4. Carlos Fiel Jr. (???)
5. “Lilo” Fiel – she finished fine arts daw

***

Natividad Fiel married Gil Rodriguez Pelegrin (Gil died 4 years ago daw). Sampu ang mga anak nila but siyam lang ang naalala ni Sr. Milagros:
1. Antonio Fiel Pelegrin
2. Baby Fiel Pelegrin
3. Gil Fiel Pelegrin Jr.
4. Teresita Fiel Pelegrin
5. Asuncion Fiel Pelegrin
6. Chit Fiel Pelegrin
7. Eugene Fiel Pelegrin
8. Dominic Fiel Pelegrin
9. Tina Fiel Pelegrin(now in California)

IF YOU KNOW SOME OF THE NAMES LISTED IN HERE, DO NOT HESITATE TO ADD THROUGH COMMENTS OR EMAIL ME AT fielsvd@yahoo.com

Maraming salamat po.

JULIET NGO FIEL

I believe many in our clan are into politics. In the Visayas Region, there are a good number of them: Gwen, Byron and Pablo Fiel Garcia of Cebu; Benjamin Fiel Tugonon, who passed away recently, was a consistent topnotcher as a councilor and was the former vice mayor of Ormoc (Thanks to Attorney Oscar Fiel for the info). My lolo Bonifacio Fiel, the cousin of my Lolo Feliciano, was a vice-mayor of Kiblawan, Davao del Sur as a result of the 1980 election. He died as a soldier when I was still at a very young age. Here in Davao, a good number of our relatives also threw their hat in the political arena. Some won, some didn’t.

In my effort to really look for more relatives to be featured in our Fiel Clan Blog, my mouse directed me to the present mayor of Looc, Romblon. She is Juliet Ngo Fiel. She is an alumna of Looc National High School in Romblon.

According to http://politikahan.com/tablas2007.html she gathered a total vote of 5,089 last elections which paved way for her to lead the town of Looc, which is located in a well-protected bay serving as rich-fishing ground for the people. Mayor Juliet Ngo Fiel maintain the successful fish sanctuary in Looc Bay.

Here's the world famous Fish Sanctuary in Looc, Romblon located in Looc Bay, one of the world's most beautiful bays. The fish sanctuary is home to hundreds of beautiful fish species as well as a rich collection of corals and giant clams. It is project of the municipal government of Looc, Romblon now under Mayor Juliet Ngo Fiel.

Hehe, I should visit this place and try snorkeling. So, to all Fiel out there, if you look for tourist destinations in the next holidays, try Looc, Romblon. And of course, do not forget to make a courtesy call sa ating Mayor, si Hon. Juliet Ngo Fiel.

GIOVANNI FIEL NAKPIL

Hold your breath, this is a very interesting discovery! This will really make us all proud!

I chanced to browse website firstacademy.net, and this site has good news for us all Fiel clan! It cited several Filipinos who made waves in their contribution to making high-quality movies for global distribution.

AND ONE OF THEM HAPENS TO BE...

"Giovanni Fiel Nakpil, worked for George Lucas' "Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones" and built and animated some characters for "Van Helsing". He also worked on "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl."

Source: http://www.firstacademy.net/art-abs.html

The website www.senecac.on.ca/ called him "Master of Movie Mayhem."

Giovanni Fiel Nakpil is working as a 3D Modeler for Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) — the award-winning visual effects company owned by Star Wars creator George Lucas. Gio continues to add blockbusters to his already impressive resumĆ©. They include the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie, the final chapter of the Star Wars saga and War of the Worlds.

Giovanni’s love of drawing and Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) led him to Seneca’s Digital Media Technical Production program, which prepares students for careers in the computer graphics and digital media industries.

The first ILM project he worked on as a 3D Modeler was Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones.Today, his film credits include Van Helsing, Dreamcatcher, Matrix Revolutions and both Pirates of The Caribbean films.

“I never would have dreamed that I would be working for ILM,” says the 30-year-old Star Wars fan. He was recruited to ILM after working for animation companies in Toronto and Texas.

His Seneca training has allowed him to take on greater challenges with each film, culminating with a chance to work on a Steven Spielberg production.

“Being able to work on War of the Worlds was like winning the lottery.”

Giovanni created the giant laserblasting alien machines in War of the Worlds — considered to be a major character in the film — and the alien probe that threatens Tom Cruise.

Yon palang kinatatakitan nating mga animations, gawa ng isang kapamilya natin.

Anong say nyo?

His aunt, Corito Fiel of Philippine Daily Inquirer, wrote:

"CAUGHT my nephew in Van Helsing and though Giovanni Fiel Nakpil was somewhere lost in the fast-moving after-film credits.Felt his unseen yet strong, sure hand in all its fire-breathing glory as Dracula in his climactic battle with Hugh Jackman as the Demon Slayer, grandly morphs into the frighteningly hideous HellBeast."

JUDGE ESPERANZA FIEL GARCIA

When Judge (ret.) Esperanza “Inday” Fiel Garcia reached her diamond year (75), her loving family honored her with a grand celebration at the Marco Polo Plaza. The soft-spoken matriarch was beaming as she entered the ballroom with her devoted husband, Rep. Pablo Garcia. They were met by their grateful children: Gov. Gwen, GSIS president Winston, Nelson, Byron, Marlon, Rep. Pablo John and Farla. The only one missing was daughter Dierdre who lives in New Jersey with her family.

It was a beautiful celebration of a life well lived as narrated by Gov. Gwen, GSIS president Winston and Rep. PJ.

On his part, Rep. Pabling recounted their love story, how they met when Tia Inday mistook him for my father Jesus (Tio Pabling’s look-alike) who was her teacher at the University of San Carlos College of Law.

That case of mistaken identity changed the course of their lives and produced 8 accomplished children, numerous grandchildren and a handful of great grandchildren.

FELICIANO FIEL

Half of my name “Felmar” comes from him. My name stands for the combination of my paternal grandparents Lolo Feliciano and Lola Marcelina. Lola died on June 1989. I was in second grade.

Lolo “Pesing” died on September 3, 2008, Wednesday, 1:30 pm. I was in Tagaytay and when the news was relayed to me, I immediately remembered the many memorable moments I spent with him.

During my childhood, I felt that I was my grandparents’ favorite because when they harvest coconuts (N.B. they owned hectares after hectares of land), they would not allow me to help while my other cousins who were older than me were all required to assist. I felt like a seƱorito because I only watched them with delight while holding my bottle of milk.

When Lola died, Lolo Pesing was alone in my grandparent’s home. That is why, for sometime, I would accompany him during the night. He would tell me stories while in his rocking chair under the moonlight. He would prepare the mosquito net for us and made sure that no mosquitoes ever touched my skin during my sleep. Lolo was indeed great!

Lolo was a very hardworking person. He would wake up at around four in the morning and would immediately go to the farm. He had no time for another love and devoted his life between farm and his many grandchildren. He was fortunate to even see some of his great-granddaughters and great-grandsons.

Soon after, he gave his post-World War II two-storey Spanish house to my parents, and we lived there. Lolo moved to my father’s sister Mommy Cita. He was asked not to work in the farm anymore but he became sick for doing nothing. So, Mommy Cita gave him the freedom to do some of the chores in the back yard, and he grew many, many fruits.

Whenever I am in Kiblawan, I always visit him. He has a sharp memory. He always remembers me.

But on September 3, he died of old age. God bless you, Lolo.

SISTER MILAGROS FIEL

One Friday afternoon, I visited a nun at a convent in Quezon City. But it was not an ordinary visit. I was visiting a nun with the surname Fiel. She is Sr. Milagros Fiel from Ormoc. She informed me that she has two more sisters who are also nuns: Sister Mary Ann Fiel and Sister Teresita Fiel. One of them is now in Good Shepherds Convent in Katipunan and the other in one school in Batangas.

Her sister who now resides in Katipunan is one of the founders of the well-visited Good Shepherd's ube jam store in Baguio.

I already heard about Sister Milagros before but we only met last year. She said she once worked under the Propaganda in Rome. She belongs to the Sister Servants of the Holy Spirit or the Blue Sisters. You may visit her at the Blue Sister's Convent in Poinsettia, E. Rodriguez Sr. Blvd., Quezon City.
