MY JOURNEY TO SIBONGA, CEBU

MALAKAS lang talaga ang loob ko! Since I started my interest in family tree, I have always heard about Sibonga, Cebu. Sabi ng mga relatives ko and my lolo, dito daw nakatira ang lolo ng lolo ko or my great-great grandfather, Elias Fiel. After the Fiel Clan Reunion in Kiblawan, Davao del Sur, I went to Cebu to search for my roots before going to Zamboanga for my mission area (pari po kasi ako di ba?).From Cebu City, malapit lang pala ang Sibonga. Wala akong kakilala doon but I was confident na pagdating ko doon, madali lang mahanap ang mga Fiel na nakatira doon. And yes, I was not wrong...

And guess what, pagdating ko sa munisipyo, ito ang nakita ko kaagad!!! There is a Fiel employee in the land of my grandfathers...Not only that, when I went to Guimbangco-an, the particular barrio in Sibonga na talagang pinagmulan ni Lolo Elias, ito ang tumambad sa akin sa pinakabungad: the barangay captain was Retche Fiel. Kamag-anak! Hehehe.
His father was born on 1937. I was able to talk to him. His father was right, di na niya naabutan si Elias Fiel and his sons and daughters. They moved to Mindanao in the early 30's. My lolo Lope Fiel moved to Davao in 1932 to look for greener pastures and the year after, dinala na niya ang kanyang mga kapatid. But I still would like to talk personally to his father this August. Sa phone lang kasi nagkausap...
This is Retche and I

Lola Juling Fiel was right when I interviewed her. One of the reasons there was an exodus of Fiel family from Sibonga to Leyte and Mindanao was that the land was not very productive. Gagmay ra daw ang mga mais. Dili daw katubo ug tag-as. I saw this also when I reached Guimbangco-an.

THE LINE OF ELIAS FIEL (UPDATED)

Even my relatives do not have the knowledge asa pangitaon ang line ng kanyang kapatid na si Isaac Fiel. When I went to Guimbangco-an, Sibonga, Cebu last May 28, 2009 wala na ring mga Fiel na nakaalala sa kanila. But at this point, it suffices to say na nadagdagan ang record ko sa line ni Elias Fiel, my great-great grandfather.
javascript:void(0)

1. FIRST GENERATION:

1. Elias Fiel - married to Felomina Surposa (see 2.1)
2. Isaac Fiel

Brothers Elias and Isaac lived in Guimbangco-an, Sibonga, Cebu.

2. SECOND GENERATION (Mga Anak ni Elias at Felomina):

2.1. Kids of Elias Fiel and Felomina Surposa

1. Donato Fiel married to Hermogena Cañamo (see 3.1)
2. Aniceto Fiel married to Mantang Terante (see 3.2)

6. Cristina Fiel married to Enteng Estudillo (see 3.6)
7. Bonifacio Fiel married to Modesta Darong (see 3.7)
8. Rosa Fiel married to Mateo Bustamante (see 3.8)
9. Teodoro Fiel (naglayas ito sa Leyte) (see 3.9)
10. Santiago Fiel married to Marcela Mirafuentes (see 3.10)

According to Lola Juling Fiel, Si Teodoro Fiel ay naglayas sa Leyte dahil ito pala ay nagtampo sa isa sa kanyang mga utol because they were in love with the same woman and ang napili ng babae ay ang kanyang utol. So, he eloped to Leyte for soul-searching. Pagbalik niya sa Cebu, may asawa na rin siya but our resource persons could no longer recall the name of his wife.

The land in Sibonga was not very suitable for farming. Except for Teodoro Fiel, the Fiel siblings went to Dumalinao and Pagadian in Zamboanga, island of Mindanao for greener pastures.

2. 2. I do not have the records of the sons and daughters of Isaac Fiel.

HOW TO REACH KIBLAWAN

TO ALL FIEL IN THE WORLD:The biggest gathering of Fiel Clan is about to happen this coming May 22 to 23, 2009 at Poblacion, Kiblawan, Davao del Sur. Mga kapamilya, come to our clan reunion and re-kindle the blood that ties us into one family. Our family name, one filled with pride, carries the history of generations gone by. For those who have lived and those not yet born, our name strong and proud, forever lives on...For details, contact Auntie Josefina "Jocing" Fiel Luy at 09067349936.

During the 1980 election, the ABC (Association of Barangay Captains President, Hon. Bonifacio Fiel was elected Vice Mayor. To date, Kiblawan remains one of the most prominent towns where the Fiel clan are very known kaliwa at kanan.

Having announced this, the greatest next question is "paano ba mararating ang Kiblawan, Davao del Sur?"

Kiblawan is approximate two to three hours from Davao City. SA mga mag-aatend sa ating reunion, I suggest that you inform Ate Jocing that you are coming so that our dear organizers may have a bird's eye-view ng mga sasama sa ating reunion. There are also Fiel from the city proper. So, baka maka-hitch kayo papunta doon.

From the city, you may also take the bus. Punta kayo sa Ecoland Terminal. I suggest you take the bus going to GenSan.

Huwag matulog during the ride dahil magaganda ang view going to Davao del Sur. Not only that, baka pag matulog kayo, makakarating kayo sa GenSan.

So, remind the driver or the conductor na bababa kayo sa Padada para di kayo lumagpas.

Bus fare from Ecoland Terminal, Davao City ay more or less 100 pesos.

Pagdating nyo ng Padada, alas puno ang mga dyip (meaning, di aalis ang jeep kung di puno -- and sometimes it takes eternity to wait na mapuno ang dyip). So, better take the habal-habal, the motor taxi. It costs 50 pesos.

So, kitakits!

WHY ARE WE SCATTERED???

By this time you found this blog, you might wonder how come the Fiel Clan are so scattered all over the Philippines, and yet all of us believed that all Fiel in the Philippines are all related in blood.

Not only that.

We may not be able to provide exact answers but our theories may prove to patch up little by little the big puzzling picture...

Ayon kay Felicisimo Fiel na nasa Cebu ngayon, "my father told me that my great2x grandfather have 18 brothers when the world war came they were scattered or separated by situation i think that the reason why our surename FIEL are scattered all over the Philippines and the world as well."

Richard Fiel also attempted to explain the Fiel diaspora, "history sa ako lolo ngano abot sila sa mindanao sa buhi pa siya Strikto kuno kaayo ilang Father tungod kay katsila kuno ang batasan ,mao nilayas sila sa Leyte gidala niya iyang mga igsoon
sa mindanao..."

Those from Angeles City as well as Bulacan believed that the Fiel reached the island of Luzon because of work-related phenomenon. Many of their great grandfathers were soldiers from Cebu...

On my part, I believed many Fiel left Cebu before and after the World War II to look for greener pastures. The family of Julian Fiel, my great grandfather and perhaps all his sons and daughters settled in Davao and Zamboanga, bought lands to cultivate...kaya naman ang mga Fiel sa Davao daghan ug mga yuta...hehe.

Tito Fiel of Misamis Occidental narrated to me that his lolo was from Cebu. He shared a very interesting anecdote. Before the Word War II, the family of his lolo also went to Mindanao. Unfortunately, one of their brothers rode the wrong bus: he arrived not in Mindanao, but in Leyte.

Sucylin Fiel - Vero also provided an interesting anecdote: "At age 5 to 7, there was an old man in our house and my parents told me he was my lolo "Kulas Fiel" a brother of my lolo Victor and lola Leyang. All I can remember was he came from the US at doon siya nagkalat ng lahi niya esp in Hawaii & California. Wanna know how were he able to go to the US? Sumakay daw siya ng barko na biyaheng Hawaii at nagtago sa loob ng malalaking kaldero. Nasa laot na ng ma discover ng crew, so ginawa na lang siya helper sa kitchen. Then he worked with pineapple plantation in Hawaii. Then he moved to California. When he came home 1 na lang ang naging anak niya dito sa Pilipinas. Who knows? baka mga anak niya yong mga Fiel in other countries."

How about you, how can you explain the Fiel diaspora?
